Discovering the Tucson Landscape

The Biosphere 2 Students Have Landed "The beauty that we see in the vernacular landscape is the image of our common humanity: hard work, stubborn hope, and mutual forbearance striving to be loved. I believe that a landscape which makes these qualities manifest is one that can be called beautiful."

- John Brinckerhoff Jackson

Welcome. We are Earth Semester Spring 2000 students at the Biosphere 2 Center in Arizona. As an independent project, we have taken photographs of signs around the Tucson Metropolitan area and studied their cultural contexts. Our main goal was to create a sense of place for Biosphere 2 students, as well as many others who are unfamiliar with the Tucson area. Click here for the essay that explains our project in greater depth. All photographs were taken in April and May, 2000.
